In addition to human clinical studies, preclinical research on eggshell membrane has explored biological mechanisms that may support skin health and overall wellness. Laboratory and animal studies suggest eggshell membrane components may help support collagen and hyaluronic acid production, antioxidant defenses, microbiome balance, and skin barrier function.
Key Findings from Preclinical Research
1. Gut Microbiome and Intestinal Barrier Function
Several animal and laboratory studies investigating eggshell membrane supplementation have reported changes in gut microbiota composition and intestinal health markers:
- Restoration of microbial balance between Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes
- Reduction in Proteobacteria, a bacterial group often associated with inflammatory conditions
- Support for intestinal epithelial restitution
- Reduced expression of inflammatory signaling markers
- Increased production of butyrate, a beneficial short-chain fatty acid important for gut barrier health
These findings were reported in experimental models including DSS-induced intestinal inflammation over approximately 19 days in animal models.
2. Antioxidant and Cellular Protection Pathways
Mechanistic studies examining eggshell membrane have also reported support for antioxidant defense systems:
- Increased activity of SOD1 (superoxide dismutase), a key antioxidant enzyme
- Reduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity
- Support for cellular protection against oxidative stress
- Potential support for healthy cellular aging pathways
These effects were observed in experimental models examining UV-induced oxidative skin damage over approximately 12 weeks.
3. Skin Structure and Fibroblast Activity
Laboratory studies evaluating eggshell membrane components have also reported:
- Stimulation of fibroblast activity
- Support for collagen synthesis
- Support for hyaluronic acid production
- Potential inhibition of enzymes that degrade structural proteins, including collagenase and elastase
Why This Research Matters
Collectively, preclinical and mechanistic studies suggest eggshell membrane may support multiple biological pathways linked to healthy skin and overall wellness, including collagen and elastin metabolism, skin hydration and barrier function, antioxidant defense systems, and gut microbiota balance and intestinal barrier integrity. These mechanisms may help explain the visible improvements in skin appearance, hydration, elasticity, and dermal density reported in human studies.*

Ovoderm® Ingredient Summary & Real-World Relevance
The collective research on Ovoderm® — including published human clinical studies, additional human data on file, and mechanistic research — suggests that supplementation may help support key aspects of skin structure and appearance, including hydration, elasticity, dermal density, and barrier integrity. Human studies using 300 mg daily have reported measurable improvements in markers associated with skin moisture retention, firmness, wrinkle appearance, hair density, and nail condition over periods of 5 to 12 weeks.
From a practical standpoint, these findings suggest Ovoderm® may help individuals support visible signs of healthy skin aging, maintain skin hydration and resilience, and promote the appearance of fuller hair and stronger nails as part of a daily wellness routine. Because the ingredient contains naturally occurring proteins and connective-tissue compounds that are present in the skin's extracellular matrix, it may provide nutritional support for biological pathways involved in maintaining skin structure and overall appearance.*
